SEO Checklist for Beginners

1. Picking a Domain name

It is important to choose a URL that is memorable and can be branded in the long run and can be easily associated with your company. Your URL does not necessarily need to incorporate your keywords however search engines do pick up on them.

2. Domain Hosting

Choose an ICANN registered hosting company. If you are in the UK some SEO specialists believe having a .co.uk can be beneficial, however this is up for debate. Ensure you have a reliable host that has a good reputation

3. Choosing Keywords

Make sure you make full use of keyword tools that are freely available online. Keyword research will ensure that you are targeting the right keywords for what your website offers.

Geo-targeted keywords are generally easier to achieve higher rankings rather than broad terms.

4. On page optimisation

After your keyword research has been carried out, ensure you place your keywords in your title tags and your H1 and H2 tags. In order to benefit further try and overlap keywords. An example of this would be:

“Liverpool Web Designers”

This means it can be recognised for Liverpool Web Designers, Liverpool Web Design, Liverpool Web Designers.

Here you can see in bold the keywords that will be identified by using one keyword phrase.

Meta tags are not that important, the Meta description should be be a sentence/paragraph describing the contents of that page. The Meta description is seen in search engine results so you want this to be readable by users.

Use bullet points where you can, it breaks up the content and makes it easier to read.

5. Off Page Optimisation

Ensure you put your keywords in your anchor text when back linking off other websites. If it is possible try and get back links from web pages that have high page rank. Also try and get one way links to your site. Search engines like this as it shows your page has credibility and it’s not just a link exchange.

When linking try and deep link. This is when you receive links to your site that doesn’t just link to the homepage but links to other pages deep within your website.

6. Create a Sitemap

Creating a sitemap will allow search engines to crawl through your website easier and index relevant information on it.

7. Register with Directories

Ensure you register your website with all major directories and all second tier directories. Search engines such as Google use these directories to index certain information about your website. Some useful directories are Google directory, Yahoo directory, bing directory and DMOZ. If you have enough money it may be worth paying for directory listings in other countries.

8. Link Building

Link building is an ongoing process. Make sure you check your rankings regularly and note down the positions you fall under your keywords. Create a spreadsheet with all your rankings for keywords and note down specific actions so you can see if your rankings have improved because of a certain action. To ensure your links are being index by search engines, open a webmasters account and look up the links to your site section.

Making my website both professionally sound & maximally accessible?

For example, I have Flash and alternative content for those w/out. What other technologies should I prepared for users to lack/have disabled?

Should I validate “Markup” or “as XML”?

Is it important to give the language?

I’ve checked the site in IE 6, 7 & 8, Firefox 2 & 3, Opera and Safari. I’ll probably get Google Chrome in there too. Any important browsers/versions I’m missing?

Should I check it on a Mac and how is that possible if I only have a PC?

Any other points I’m overlooking?

(There are a lot of SEO checklists out there so I don’t need you to go too deep into that.)

Thanks!

1. Validate your HTML or XHTML.
2. Validate your CSS.
3. Try running your site through the free Functional Accessibility Evaluator, which will generate an accessibility report.
4. Use an accessibility tool like WebAim WAVE to check your site.
