Most Important Qualities and Skills Required to Run a Website

Twenty years ago, one of the primary skills you would have needed would be some sort of programming knowledge combined with some HTML experience. More than likely you would build the website from scratch or pay a development team to do this for you. Luckily those days are gone, and building and running a website can be done quite effectively without the need to learn programming.

Here are the main requirements for a successful web operation today:

1. Planning & research

I’ve listed planning at the top because while it is quite possible to set up a website without much planning, it is virtually impossible to operate a successful website without constant input. Furthermore, proper planning and an appreciation of where a website should go in the future allows you to stay “light on your feet” and flexible. Websites often suffer a slow decline because upgrading or updating them is simply untenable.

Part of being organized in this regard means keeping up with new developments, leveraging new technologies and platforms and striving to ensure that manual labour is kept to a minimum in order to keep costs down.

Almost everyone at one time or another, myself especially, is guilty of not doing sufficient research before jumping into a new project. The Internet can punish you out of all proportion to the crime in this regard. It’s not hard to find people who have forked out thousands or tens of thousands of dollars for websites or web features that are commonplace and often freely or cheaply available.

If you’re not using one of the best web platforms for free (at least to start off with), then you haven’t done your research. To cite another example; you might be paying next to nothing for hosting, but any time you need to do something new it takes a week to implement because there’s no support. Get on Google and hunt down whatever information you need before you take a step. Planning and research gives you the foresight to avoid wasteful expenditure and any number of problems that might otherwise arise.

2. Basic technical ability

I mentioned that programming is no longer a core requirement for creating and operating a website. That’s not to say it’s completely easy. You need to have an understanding of how websites, webservers and the Internet works. This information is readily and freely available all over the Internet and it doesn’t take long to learn the difference between your fileserver and database.

You’ll need to know how to operate your website. This is not the same as programming it, but it does mean you need to gain some experience in using it. Often the best way to do this is to create a test, or development, machine on your own PC.

3. Marketing skills

A common misconception is that completing your website is the end of the journey/saga, when in reality, it is the start. Completing the process of conceiving, creating and operating a website gives you some floorspace on the web. That’s fantastic, but is not really useful in and of itself. The website must have a purpose other than to sit on the Web for the sake of being there. Accordingly, whatever its purpose, you will need to market it in one way or another.

How you go about marketing a website depends on the results of your research and planning, who your target demographic is, what type of product or service you are offering and so on. One hugely important aspect of online marketing is intrinsic, good SEO – this can help improve online visibility and attract visitors without requiring constant manual labour. If you’re unfamiliar with SEO then see point 1.

4. Persistence

We’ve all heard about the enviable rise to super stardom and riches of various Web based enterprises. Sites like Twitter and Facebook, and especially Google have experienced nothing less than stellar growth. The internet’s unbridled potential to make new ventures succeed should be enough to spur anyone into action. But temper this with some sobering thoughts – 95% of all purely online businesses make no money at all.

Precisely because it has become relatively easy to create good websites, the Internet is vastly overstocked with information and content. This means that no matter what you do, pushing your way to the top means you end up having to work harder and smarter than everyone else out there. One of the best qualities to possess in order to achieve this is persistence.

5. Integration

As in traditional business, your enterprise is not an island. It needs other websites to succeed. As in traditional business, it’s not what you know its who you know. Arguably the most important aspect to gaining traction in a crowded market is making connections. On the Internet this can be done via any number of social networks like Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. But socializing is not quite enough. You also have to contribute to other people’s projects – join groups and forums and other communities and become a recognized expert and team player.

Gaining a reputation increases your chances of having other sites link to you. It increases your chances of gaining followers via RSS feeds or twitter and so on. All of which increase your search engine attractiveness, which boosts your visibility and increases traffic. This is turn leads to more connections and so it goes.

I’m sure there’s more, but that’s what I have for now. If you’re surprised that I haven’t listed hardcore technical ability in some form or another – see point 1 again.
